The Honest Timeline
Germany is the strictest customs lane of any major Western market we run. The transit itself is fast — DHL Express to Leipzig is among the most efficient air routes from Asia. The friction is at clearance: Deutsche Zoll inspects more thoroughly than HMRC or French douanes, and Germany applies MwSt to imports above €0 since the 2021 EU rule reform. Here's what actually happens after a Berlin or München buyer messages us:
| Stage | Typical duration | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Order routing | 2–4 hours | Payment confirmed, factory assigned |
| QC photos | 3–7 days | Factory inspection photos, you approve via WhatsApp |
| Pack & dispatch | 1–2 days | Boxed, picked up by DHL Shenzhen |
| DHL transit | 6–9 days | Shenzhen → Hong Kong → Leipzig hub → German depot |
| Zoll clearance | 2–4 days | Customs review at Frankfurt-Hahn or Leipzig-Halle |
| Domestic delivery | 1 day | DHL Deutschland final-mile |
Total realistic range: 11 to 17 days door to door, with most German orders landing around 13 to 15 days. Compared to the UK, Germany adds about 1 to 2 days at customs. Compared to France or Netherlands, Germany is roughly equivalent. Anyone promising a Berlin buyer 4-day delivery is either using EU warehoused stock (often unverified) or undercharging on shipping and absorbing losses.
What Shipping Costs to Germany
| Method | Cost (1 pair) | Cost (2 pairs) | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | €25–32 | €42–55 | 6–9 days |
| FedEx International | €32–40 | €55–68 | 6–8 days |
| DHL Standard (slower) | €18–24 | €30–40 | 14–24 days |
| UPS Saver | €35–42 | €58–72 | 5–7 days |
What we recommend. DHL Express. The price gap with DHL Standard is roughly €10 and you save almost two weeks. DHL Express also handles the Zoll paperwork through their broker, meaning MwSt and duty get billed cleanly via the DHL Deutschland portal. Standard parcels often sit at the local Zollamt waiting for the recipient to physically collect them with paperwork — a much worse experience.
What we don't recommend. DHL Standard or Deutsche Post for declared values above €100. The clearance handoff is slow and Zoll often requires the recipient to appear at the local Zollamt for in-person clearance, which costs you a half-day. UPS Saver is fastest but their German brokerage adds €18 to €25 in non-tax fees that DHL Express absorbs into their flat rate.
Zoll, MwSt, and Customs Reality
Germany applies the strictest import tax framework of our Western markets. Three layers can stack on a single parcel: Mehrwertsteuer (19 percent VAT), customs duty (Zoll, typically 8 to 17 percent for footwear), and a courier processing fee (typically €15 to €20 from DHL Deutschland). Below €0 declared, no MwSt is owed in theory but in practice every commercial import gets MwSt assessment.
Real numbers from 90 days of German orders: About 35 percent of parcels triggered a Zoll clearance request from DHL Deutschland — the highest rate of any of our major markets. Average bill was €42 for orders below €150 declared (MwSt only) and €68 for orders above €150 (MwSt + duty + processing). Outright seizures of single-pair parcels were around 1.5 percent, also higher than UK or France.
If DHL emails you a Zollanmeldung link, follow it carefully and pay through their portal. Parcel releases within 24 to 48 hours. Refusing means the parcel goes to the local Zollamt for in-person pickup or returns to sender after 14 days.
Multi-pair orders trigger Zoll inspections more often because the declared value crosses thresholds quickly. We split orders of three or more pairs into separate parcels which keeps each declared value below €150 (the duty threshold) and reduces the average MwSt-only bill. The extra freight is usually less than the avoided duty.
Switzerland note. Switzerland is not in the EU customs union — Swiss orders go through a separate Schweizer Zoll procedure with VAT 8.1 percent and different duty calculation. Message us if you're shipping to Zürich, Geneva, or Basel for the country-specific quote.
Payment Options for German Buyers
- Wise (formerly TransferWise). Most popular for German buyers. EUR receiving handled cleanly — we send a EUR account, you transfer SEPA or via the Wise app, settles same day or next banking day. Conversion to USD on our side at near-mid-market rate. Fee under €4 for typical orders.
- SEPA Bank Transfer. Free and reliable. We provide a Wise EUR IBAN, you send a normal SEPA Überweisung, settles in 1 to 2 banking days. Best for German buyers who don't want to install Wise.
- USDT (crypto). Common for repeat orders once buyers get comfortable. Bitpanda, Binance, and Bison are the common German on-ramps. TRC-20 network has fees of pennies.
- Revolut. Similar to Wise, often slightly faster if you're already on Revolut. Same EUR-to-USD flow.
- PayPal Friends & Family. Works, but no buyer protection on F&F. We recommend Wise or SEPA for first-time German buyers.
We do not accept Klarna, SOFORT, Giropay, or German credit/debit cards directly. Any rep service offering these checkout options is using a workaround that may freeze your charge or trigger a chargeback dispute. SEPA and Wise both give you a paper trail and a clean settlement under EU consumer transfer rules.

Germany-Specific Logistics Tips
Berlin and München apartment buildings. DHL drivers handle Hinterhof and Mehrfamilienhaus deliveries reasonably well, but for multi-tenant buildings the parcel often goes to a Paketshop or Packstation. Use the DHL app's "Wunschort" feature to direct it to a specific Packstation before first delivery attempt.
Zollamt pickup. If the DHL portal email goes ignored or you don't respond to a Zollanmeldung, the parcel is forwarded to your local Zollamt. You'll need passport/Personalausweis, a printout of the email, and the original invoice copy we provide. Plan a half-day for this.
Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein. Different customs procedures for each. Austria is EU-aligned (similar to Germany pricing/timeline). Switzerland and Liechtenstein need Schweizer Zoll handling — message for quote.
EU-wide shipping. We ship to all EU countries through similar DHL channels. France, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic — pricing and timeline are similar to Germany within ±1 day and ±€5. Each has its own customs quirk worth a quick conversation before ordering.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping to Berlin actually take?
Door to door, plan on 11 to 17 days from QC approval. DHL Express runs 6 to 9 days through Leipzig hub, plus 2 to 4 days for German Zoll. Germany has stricter customs procedures than UK or France so the clearance leg adds time. DHL Standard is slower (14 to 24 days) and adds Zoll friction at delivery.
Will I pay MwSt and customs duty?
Frequently. Germany applies 19 percent MwSt to imports above €0 since the 2021 EU rule change, plus customs duty (8 to 17 percent for footwear) above €150, plus a courier processing fee around €15 to €20. About 35 percent of German orders trigger a Zoll clearance request, our highest rate. Average bill is €40 to €75 when triggered.
How does payment work for German buyers?
Wise (EUR receiving), SEPA bank transfer (free, 1-2 banking days), USDT, or Revolut. PayPal F&F works but lacks buyer protection. We don't accept Klarna, SOFORT, Giropay, or German credit/debit cards directly — those are workarounds that often trigger payment freezes.
Where does Zoll inspect parcels?
Most Zoll inspections happen at Frankfurt-Hahn, Leipzig-Halle, or Köln-Bonn cargo facilities. Outright seizures on individual rep parcels are around 1.5 percent — higher than UK but not catastrophic. Most "holds" are MwSt and duty collection delays of 2 to 5 days.
Do you ship outside Berlin?
Yes, every German postleitzahl. München, Hamburg, Köln, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Dresden, all serviced. We also ship to Austria, Switzerland (separate customs), Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Poland — message for country-specific timelines and costs.
What if a parcel goes to the local Zollamt?
If you don't respond to the DHL Zollanmeldung email within 7 to 10 days, the parcel is forwarded to your local Zollamt for in-person pickup. Bring Personalausweis, the email printout, and the invoice we provide. After 14 days unclaimed, parcels return to sender at your cost. We replace seized pairs at half price.
