The Honest Timeline
UK shipping is one of our smoother routes. London Heathrow is a major DHL hub and the Coventry CFO clearance facility is faster than most European customs. Here's what actually happens from the moment a Manchester or East London buyer messages us:
| Stage | Typical duration | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Order routing | 2 hours | Payment matched, factory assigned |
| QC photos | 3–7 days | Factory shoots inspection photos, you approve on WhatsApp |
| Pack & dispatch | 1–2 days | Boxed, picked up by DHL Shenzhen |
| DHL transit | 5–8 days | Shenzhen → Hong Kong → East Midlands hub → your nearest depot |
| UK customs | 1–2 days | HMRC clearance at Coventry or Heathrow, VAT request if triggered |
Total realistic range: 10 to 17 days door to door, with most orders landing around 12 to 14 days. Anyone offering a UK buyer 3-day delivery is shipping from suspect domestic stock — meaning warehoused inventory of unclear provenance. The real factory route always involves an air leg from Asia and you can't compress that below 5 days.
What Shipping Costs to the UK
| Method | Cost (1 pair) | Cost (2 pairs) | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | £25–32 | £42–52 | 5–8 days |
| FedEx International | £32–40 | £55–68 | 5–7 days |
| Royal Mail Tracked | £18–22 | £28–35 | 12–22 days |
| UPS Saver | £35–42 | £58–72 | 4–6 days |
What we recommend. DHL Express. The price gap with Royal Mail tracked is roughly £10 and you save a week. DHL also has the most reliable signature handover for London apartment blocks, which matters in a city full of communal entrances. UPS Saver is fastest but only worth the extra if you absolutely need next-week delivery.
What we don't recommend. Royal Mail International for parcels above £100 declared value. The clearance handoff between RM and HMRC is slow and the parcel often sits at Heathrow for an extra 5 to 7 days while customs decides how to bill VAT. DHL handles VAT collection through their own portal which is much smoother.
Brexit, VAT, and Customs Reality
Post-Brexit rules are simpler than people fear. Direct China-to-UK shipping was never affected by Brexit — that's an EU lane, not a UK lane. What did change is VAT: HMRC now collects VAT on all imports above £135 declared value, regardless of whether goods are genuine. Below that threshold, no VAT, no clearance fee.
Real numbers from our last 90 days of UK orders: About 15% of UK parcels triggered a VAT request from DHL. Average VAT charge was £35 for orders that triggered it. Customs seizures were under 0.5% — much lower than US, partly because UK borders prioritise commercial enforcement.
If a VAT request hits your DHL portal, pay it. The parcel releases within 24 hours. Refusing VAT means the parcel returns to sender at your cost.
Multi-pair orders trigger VAT more often because the declared value crosses the £135 threshold. We split orders of three or more pairs into separate parcels, which keeps each declared value below the trigger and avoids most VAT bills. Yes, it's slightly more shipping cost; it's still cheaper than paying 20% VAT on a £400 declared value.
Payment Options for UK Buyers
- Wise (formerly TransferWise). Most popular for UK buyers. GBP to USD conversion is honest, fee is small, settles in under a day. We send a USD receiving account and Wise handles the FX cleanly.
- Revolut. Similar to Wise, often slightly faster if you're already on Revolut. Same flow.
- USDT (crypto). Common for second and third orders once buyers get comfortable. Lowest fees, instant settlement. TRC-20 network has fees of pennies.
- PayPal Friends & Family. Works, but no buyer protection on F&F. We recommend Wise for first-time UK buyers, then PayPal once trust is established.
- SWIFT bank transfer. Slow (2 to 3 days) and a £20 to £30 bank fee, but available if other methods don't work.
We do not accept UK debit/credit cards. Any rep service offering a UK card checkout is using a workaround that may freeze your charge. Stick with Wise or Revolut — both give you a paper trail and consumer protections within the transfer service itself.

UK Logistics Tips
London apartment buildings. DHL drivers are good with concierge buildings and porters. For walk-up flats, sign up for DHL On Demand Delivery once you have a tracking number — you can re-route to your office, a Locker, or a neighbour's address before the first attempt.
Northern Ireland. Post-protocol, NI parcels go through the same UK customs queue as GB parcels. No EU customs detour. Same timeline as London.
Highlands and Islands. Add 1 to 2 days domestic transit. DHL routes through Inverness and the Scottish ferries on the regular schedule.
VAT-triggered parcels. If DHL emails you about a clearance fee, click through and pay. Don't ignore it — after 14 days unpaid, parcels return to sender. Average VAT bill on a triggered UK order is £35.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does shipping to London actually take?
Door to door, plan on 10 to 17 days from QC approval. DHL Express runs 5 to 8 days through East Midlands hub, plus 1 to 2 days for UK customs at Coventry or Heathrow. Royal Mail tracked is slower (12 to 22 days) and uneconomical above £100 declared value.
Has Brexit affected rep imports to the UK?
Not in the way most assume. Brexit changed the EU customs route, not China-to-UK. Direct shipping from China is if anything slightly easier now because parcels no longer transit EU hubs. The bigger Brexit impact is VAT collection — see the customs section above.
Will I have to pay VAT?
Sometimes. UK rules say imports above £135 declared value attract VAT (20%) plus a small clearance fee. We declare conservatively where legal. About 15% of UK orders trigger a VAT request from the courier, typically £25 to £55. Pay through the courier's link to release the parcel.
What payment methods work for UK buyers?
Wise, Revolut, and crypto (USDT) are the three most common. All three clear in under a day with low fees. PayPal Friends and Family works but lacks buyer protection. SWIFT is supported as a fallback. We don't accept credit cards directly.
Do you ship outside London?
Yes, all of the UK. Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Belfast — same DHL pricing and timeline. Northern Ireland routes through the same UK customs queue post-protocol. Highlands and islands add 1 to 2 days domestic transit.
What if customs holds my parcel?
HMRC holds for legitimate clearance reasons (VAT collection, value verification) usually release within 1 to 3 days once paperwork is sorted. Outright seizures are rare on UK single-pair shipments. We replace seized pairs at half-price.
